Job Purpose
The Grounds Worker maintains school buildings and grounds in top condition to ensure full and productive use of District facilities.
Duties and Responsibilities
Responsible for snow removal and lawn care equipment, including fueling, maintenance, and repairs. Operates and performs maintenance/repairs annually and as needed on a wide variety of landscape equipment, including but not limited to pressure washers, chainsaws, pole saws, hedgers, string trimmers, and blowers.
Maintains electronic files of work performed on all equipment.
Operates and transports heavy equipment, including tractors with loaders, dump trucks, aerators, small and large area mowers, and pick-up trucks pulling heavy equipment trailers.
Performs weekly grounds safety and vandalism checks.
Installs, repairs, and maintains irrigation systems.
Performs tree and shrub maintenance.
Performs small asphalt patching and crack sealing projects.
Performs the maintenance of painted curbs and parking lot markings.
Performs playground equipment inspection, repair, and maintenance including the delivery and spreading of fall zone material for playground safety.
Prepares athletic fields including but not limited to game markings and dragging fields.
Performs the installation and maintenance of cyclone fencing and gates.
Welds and repairs ground equipment.
Performs district-wide snow removal utilizing provided equipment including truck-mounted snow blades and snow blowers/throwers.
Responds to emergencies during and after hours
Custodial Duties as needed
Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Qualifications
Required
HS diploma or GED certificate.
Valid driver’s license.
Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs with or without accommodation.
Preferred
Experience working in a school environment.
Certified or able to obtain required training in these areas
Pesticide and Herbicide Applicator License
Skills and Knowledge
Ability to communicate orally and in writing with a variety of individuals.
Ability to multitask and adjust to frequent interruptions and shifting deadlines.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions and percentages.
Computer Skills: Ability to proficiently use email and Google.
Operate a forklift, boom, scissor lifts, lawn care, and snow removal equipment. Work safely in operating equipment and performing duties to prevent injury to self and others.
Ability to perform tasks without constant supervision.
Working conditions
Essential functions may require maintaining the physical condition necessary for sitting, walking, or standing for prolonged periods; near visual acuity to review written documentation; ability to hear and understand speech at normal room levels and on the telephone; manual dexterity and hand/eye coordination to operate vehicles, equipment, computers, and communication devices; normal office and shop environment; exposure to changing temperatures and weather conditions, frequent lifting and moving items of varying weight and size. Occasionally perform work beyond a standard 40-hour work week when work-load requires.
Physical requirements
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling; significant climbing and balancing; considerable stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 60% walking, and 30% standing.
